2008 Summer Institute June 23-25 • Lake Tahoe, California
Registration Fee: $550
In this time of ever-increasing accountability and standards it is essential
to understand how learning happens! The Highly Effective Teaching Model has a long history
using the biology of learning as the central focus of classroom instruction.
The three overarching components of the model include: Biology
of Learning, Instructional Strategies, and Conceptual Curriculum. The
context for these components is Responsible Citizenship, the ability
to make informed decisions about yourself and your community.
Each day will include an overview of a key component of the HET model,
followed by grade level-specific breakout sessions designed around
practical strategies for implementation back at school. You may also choose
from topic specific strands that will address your specific interests and
needs for implementing HET.
HET Learning Principles:
An overview of the current ‘biology of learning’ and the implications
for our students. The HET Principles, founded on the biology of learning
and developed over the past 25 years will include: Intelligence As a
Function of Experience, Emotion As the Gatekeeper to Performance,
Learning As Pattern-Seeking and Program-Building, The Power of
Multiple Intelligences, and The Role of Personal Temperament.
Bodybrain-Compatible Instructional Strategies:
Including: Choices, Absence of Threat, Meaningful
Content, Nurturing Reflective Thinking, Immediate
Feedback, Collaboration, Adequate Time, Enriched Environment, Mastery/Application, and Movement
to Enhance Learning.
Conceptual Curriculum:
Present curriculum grounded in concepts for lifelong
learning while embedding state standards and skills
in meaningful content. Conceptually grounded
curriculum can be generalized to other times and
places past, present, and future. Examples of
conceptual curriculum for a day, week, month, and
year will be explored.
First Things First:
Create your Action Plan: where to begin, how to
include the community, and how to bring the whole
staff along on the journey.
Materials Included:
You will receive a copy of Exceeding Expectations:
A User's Guide to Implementing Brain Research in the
Classroom and Your Personal Handbook for Implementing
the HET (formerly ITI) Model, a coaching handbook which walks
